Title

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON GAS LINE BREAK DETECTION SYSTEM IN QUARTER TURN ACTUATORS

Pages

  75-84

Abstract

In this paper the effects of ORIFICE DIAMETER, pipeline initial pressure and pipeline break PRESSURE DROP RATE on the differential pressure of diaphragm valve in a quarter turn Scotch-Yoke actuator have been studied experimentally. The gas in this study was nitrogen. The pipeline break causes a growth in oil speed and fluid pressure reduction consequently. However pressure drop is not a good signal for line break detection, because it is low and this reference tank is used. The reference tank is connected to the pipeline through a calibrated orifice with a check valve. The tank pressure is higher than the pipeline pressure, when pressure reduction occurs by line breaking. If the pressure difference between the tank and the pipeline is higher than the sustainable pressure value of diaphragm valve, the valve will be closed by an actuator. This study shows the following conclusions differential pressure of diaphragm valve is increased by the growth of pipeline break PRESSURE DROP RATE. The occurrence time of maximum differential pressure of diaphragm valve is constant for all different break PRESSURE DROP RATE and initial pressure of pipeline with the same ORIFICE DIAMETER. The maximum of differential pressure increases with the decrease of ORIFICE DIAMETER. The differential pressure of diaphragm valve increases by decrease of pipeline initial pressure for constant ORIFICE DIAMETERs and pipeline break PRESSURE DROP RATEs. The curves of maximum differential pressure generated by different pipeline break PRESSURE DROP RATEs are shown for different ORIFICE DIAMETERs and pipeline initial pressure. These important curves will be used for the design and the setting of these actuators operation.
