Title

NUMERICAL STUDY OF WAVE AND CURRENT INDUCED SEDIMENTATION IN ANZALI PORT WITH RESPECT TO THE DEVELOPED BREAKWATERS

Pages

  4-14

Abstract

SEDIMENTATION in ports (enclosed with BREAKWATERs) is one of the problems in these coastal basins. In order to solve this problem and to secure the navigation, dredging operations must be done continuously. However, in designing these ports, expedients can be carried out instead of dredging operation with high annual costs to prevent the influx of sediments into the harbor remarkably. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the western and eastern BREAKWATERs development plan in ANZALI PORT on the basin and to exactly identify the hydrodynamics and SEDIMENTATION processes using field measurements, numerical simulation, and analysis of WAVE penetration into the port basin at the conditions before and after BREAKWATERs development. In this paper, the changes of WAVE and CURRENT patterns due to construction of the new BREAKWATERs are investigated using MIKE 21.3 Coupled Model FM model and it has been tried to use the updated data for modules and to deploy minimum simplifications regarding the region modeling. For this purpose, an area of ten kilometers along the coast and nine kilometers perpendicular to the coastline have been selected as the computational domain and after running a regional numerical model for different scenarios of wind direction and speed, the boundary conditions for local model are extracted from the regional model. The simulated numerical results show that construction of new BREAKWATERs actually trapped some of the sediment particles which have naturally entered to the sea before construction of them. In other words, the extended part of the port acts as a SEDIMENTATION trap.
