Abstract

Environmental risks are factors that can affect various aspects of social and economic life of the people. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of drying trend of the URMIA LAKE on the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT of the rural areas. The study was done using the descriptive-survey method that uses field and documentary data. The population of the study included rural households in the Bakeshluchay district of the Urmia township (N=7644). According to Cochran's formula, the sample size for the population in this study was n=191 and afterwards it was divided by the proportional allocation between the different classes of the population. The validity of the research tool was obtained by using expert opinion and a pilot test was conducted for the reliability of the questionnaires. The suitable Cronbach’ Alpha coefficient for each index showed that the research tool was reliable. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results of taking the view points of the rural people showed that due to the continuing of the water reduction trend of the URMIA LAKE, the lake-based jobs have reduced, Urmia’s income has drops and the amount of income from tourism has declined. Also the economic value of agricultural lands has reduced, its diversity of cultures as well as the water levels of deep wells has dropped and Artemi’s population is exposed to risk.
