Abstract

According to the Second demographic transition theory, the substantial changes in family formation patterns such as increasing trends of divorce are recognized as the main characteristics of the contemporary family and new demography. The present study examines the major patterns and determinants of the attitudes towards divorce. This study is based on a survey conducted in rural and urban areas of Ahvaz, Babolsar, Bojnord, Gonbad Kavos, Mahmoudabad, and Hamadan. The survey was conducted among 2787 males and females aged 15 years and older. The results indicate that about one-third of the respondents hold positive attitudes toward divorce. Further, this general pattern is significantly associated with demographic determinants such as age, gender, place of residence, education, and other factors such as gender roles and religiosity. In sum, the main findings observed in this analysis tend to be consistent with the theory of modernization and changing values suggesting that attitudes towards divorce is directly and positively affected by modern and liberal perspectives.
