Title

THE STATUS OF METAPHOR IN THE SONNETS OF IRAQI STYLE

Pages

  1-29

Abstract

Sonnet is the essence of poet’s feelings and thoughts and metaphor, due to its conciseness, is the best tool for the expression of such feelings and thoughts. The analysis of sonnets of the most famous poets of Iraqi style (from Sanaee to Hafiz) indicates that the average frequency of metaphor in each sonnet is 3.33 and Sanaee, as the initiator of this trend, can be considered as a metaphorist poet by an average of 2.4. After him, the use of metaphor decreases in the poetry of Khaghani and Anvari, but in the poetry of Jamal al-Din Abdulrazagh the rate increases and Kamal al-Din Ismail Esfahani surpasses Sanaee in this regard. Again, using metaphor decreases abruptly in the poetry of Molana (the average of 2.4 in each sonnet), but it is used widely in the poetry of Khajoo. Finally, it reaches its climax in Hafiz’s sonnets by the average of six metaphors in each sonnet. The important point is that Hafiz surpasses other poets of this style with regard to using TABA’IEH METAPHOR. In sum, it can be said that metaphor may be enumerated as one of the attractions of discourse and this can be considered as one of the reasons for the popularity of Hafiz’s poetry; however, the sonnets of Sa’di and Molana show that it is not the sole element of sonnet’s beauty.
