Title

RESISTANCE OF BARLEY VARIETIES TO WATER DEFICIT IN THE ENDING STAGES OF CROP GROWTH

Abstract

 Resistance of barley crop varieties to drought and water stress, especially the sensitive periods of crop growth, e. g. Grain formation, was studied. Then WATER USE EFFICIENCY (WUE yield per unit of water used) of different varieties was estimated. The statistical design was a strip-plot in the form of complete randomized blocks. Horizontal factor was the three levels of water stress including 1. Full irrigation, 2. Cut off the last irrigation, 3. Cut-off the two last irrigation. Vertical factor was the six varieties or lines of barley crop. The experiments were replicated three times for two years. Because of changes in climatic conditions in the two years of research, the results obtained for these years were significantly different. In the first year (1999) due to high amounts of rain, the WOE parameter of the irrigation cut-off treatment and the interactive effect of variety and irrigation treatment with inclusion and exclusion of RUN OFF was not significantly meaningful. However, in the second year of research (2000) the WUE for these factors was significantly (1 %) meaningful.
