Abstract

In order to compare CENTRAL VENOUS PRESSURE (CVP) and PERIPHERAL VENOUS PRESSURE (PVP), 31 patients undergoing elective neurosurgicalor open heart surgery were studied. After induction of balanced anesthesia and controlled ventilation and cardiovascular stabilization, in order to measure CENTRAL VENOUS PRESSURE, central vein cannulation was done, then a No: 16 gauge catheter (Angiocath, 5 cm Length) was inserted through the basilic vein in the antecubital region. Simultaneous measurement of the central and PERIPHERAL VENOUS PRESSUREs was made every 3 minutes. It was found that correlation between pressures at the end of expiration was 0.92 (p<0.01) and the correlation in measurements at the end of inspiration was 0.91 (p<0.01).Pearson's correlation coefficient between pressures that were recorded from the right hand and CVP were 0.98 (p<0.01) and those were measured from the left hand and CVP were 0.90 (p<0.0l). Furthermore, pressures were recorded from right hand statistically more correlated with CVP than left hand (p< 0.01).In order to construct a relation between CVP and PVP in each case, first we checked the effect of time on CVP and PVP which led to no time effect, so mean CVP and PVP was considered in the correlation and simple linear regression.The estimated correlation coefficient was r=0.95 (p<0.01) and the estimated regression line was PVP= 3.0 + 0.9 CVP (p<0.01).
