EFFECTIVENESS OF LOCAL CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION AND AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD INJECTION IN TREATMENT OF LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS

Pages

  31-36

Abstract

Aims. LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS or TENNIS ELBOW is one of the common problems of orthopedic clinics. The aim of this study was to compare the treatment effects of autologous blood injection and LOCAL CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION in LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS patients. Materials & Methods. In this clinical trial, 60 patients suffering from LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS admitted to Hospital 501 in 2007-2008, randomly assigned to two 30 patients groups. The treatment protocol for group I was single local injection of methyl prednisolone and 2% lidocaine. For group II, local injection of autologous blood (which obtained from distal site of the same hand) in conjunction with lidocaine 2% performed. Quick DASH questionnaire completed and other factors needed for analyzing and comparing two methods recorded at the admission time, 4th and 8th weeks following treatment session.  Results. At 4th week after treatment, “upper limb pain during last 24 hours”, “maximum pain during gripping of affected hand”, “pain threshold in examination site” and Quick DASH score of autologous blood injection were better than prednisolone group (p<0.05). Autologous blood patients had significantly better condition than group II patients in all assessments parameter at 8th week (p<0.05).Conclusion. Findings of present study show better treatment effects of LOCAL AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD INJECTION than local prednisolone injection in treatment of TENNIS ELBOW patients.
