Abstract

Aims. This study designed to compare the effectiveness of VITAMIN E and IBUPROFEN on reducing the amount, duration and interval of menstrual period bleeding in PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEAl.Materials & Methods. This is an experimental cross-over study performed on 75 female students between 18 and 22 years old suffering from PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEAl. After taking written consent they divided in two groups of 40 and 35. First group received 500 units of VITAMIN E (2 tablets of 400 and 100 units) and second group 1200 mg of IBUPROFEN (400mg TDS) per day. Treatment with VITAMIN E started two days before the beginning of menstruation and continued until the first day of bleeding (3 days in total) and IBUPROFEN administered only during the first 24 hours of mence (only one day).Results. With a similar effect, both VITAMIN E and IBUPROFEN could reduce the severity of the blood loss (p<0.05).Conclusion. It appears that IBUPROFEN can be replaced by VITAMIN E in reducing of bleeding amount in PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEAl. VITAMIN E does not cause any digestive disorder or fatigue.
