Abstract

Autoimmune HEPATITIS is a self- perpetuating hepatocelluar inflammation of unknown cause. It is characterized by the presence of perportal HEPATITIS on histological examination. The clinical characteristics and the response to the treatment for 49 patients with AUTOIMMUNE HEPATITIS diagnosed in Taleghani hospital: of Tehran were evaluated. Type I AUTOIMMUNE HEPATITIS was observed in 59.3% of the cases that were ANA Positive, while in others was undetermined because of unavailability of anti LKM1 test. Immunosuppressive drug with Prednislon and Azathioprin treatment were effective in 56.3% of patients. However, 6.3% of patients showed no response to the treatment. Relapse was seen in 9.4% of the patients during reduction of dose of immunsuppresion. The follow-up evaluations for 28% of tlie cases were incomplete. Also, two of the 'patients died during the follow-up study.
