Abstract

THALASSEMIA is responsible for undesirable negative effects on individuals, families and society as a whole. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavioral patterns of MOTHERS with children suffering from THALASSEMIA. 61mothers of thalassemic children referring to the hospital were evaluated using a specially formatted questionnaire. Results showed that the mean number of pregnancies was 4.61 and the mean number of children was 4.5.Nearly 67% were not aware about their own or their husbands carrier status. A significant statistical relationship was observed between the level of literacy and the total number of children, age at marriage and number of affected children .It is concluded that the behavioral patterns of these women is not successful in preventing birth of thalassemic children .A very important point is that none of these women were successful in preventing birth of thalassemic children. It is very important that all those in contact with this group of individuals, including doctors, nurses and midwives should try to increase their educational & awareness levels and bring about a change in their attitude towards FERTILITY behaviors.
