Abstract

Sū; zani of Samarqand made use, especially in his satires and lampoons, of such rare words that are often exemplified in dictionaries only by the poet’ s own verses containing those words. Since the early compilers of dictionaries had at their disposal old codices of Sū; zani’ s Divā; n, they generally cited the correct versions of his verses. However, as the existing manuscripts of Sū; zani’ s Divā; n are hardly old enough, one can benefit from those very verses, like an alternative manuscript, in correcting his Divā; n.
