Title

ASSESSMENT OF PERITONEAL ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY IN DIAGNOSING ACUTE APPENDICITIS

Pages

  56-60

Abstract

Being one of the most common surgical diseases, ACUTE APPENDICITIS remains a diagnostic challenge for which neither definite nor specific diagnostic route is available. Widespread peritoneal cellular exudates are a simple, available and economic measure suggested for this purpose. Due to the versatile nature of the disease and the need for a specific measure, we decided to conduct this study. 50 suspect cases, candidate for appendectomy, were randomly selected for this descriptive study in AI-Zahra and Kashani Hospitals in Isfahan, Iran; on induction, they underwent peritoneal cellular exudates aspiration, the cytological results of which were compared with pathological results. 34 positive and 12 negative cases were recognized: aspiration failed in four cases. With the test sensitivity of 80.4%, 39 positive appendicitis were diagnosed. This sensitivity rate offered new chances for quick and accurate diagnosis of appendicitis, in comparison with lab, sonography, CT and laparascopy which all need modem equipment and are operator-dependent. PERITONEAL ASPIRATION CYTOLOGY will reduce the rate of negative appendectomies and complications of delayed operation.
