DEPRESSION IN MOTHERS OF CHILDREN WITH THALASSEMIA OR BLOOD MALIGNANCIES

Abstract

 Background: several studies have found that parents of children with chronic diseases or disabilities report higher level of parental depression. Mothers take on a larger part of the extra care and practical work that the child with disabilities and are at a markedly increased risk of suffering from psychological distress and depression. The main aim of the present study was to investigate those mothers with children with thalassemia disease or blood malignancies have higher scores for MATERNAL DEPRESSION compared with a group of control mothers. Methods and Materials: From markaze tebi children hospital in Tehran, 294 mother were recruited. In this descriptive- analytic cross- sectional study MATERNAL DEPRESSION was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in three groups: 98 mothers with children with THALASSEMIA, 97 mothers with children with blood malignancies and in 99 control mothers. Results: Data were analyzed in logistic regression model and there was a statistically significance difference in the degree of depression according to mothers with children with blood diseases. The odds ratio for THALASSEMIA and blood malignancies was 2.17 (1.16-4.0) and 2.71 (1.48-4.99). Conclusion: the results of this study will contribute to the development of a screening program for decreasing depression, preventing depression and promoting quality of life for mothers with children with THALASSEMIA or blood malignancies.
