Abstract

The purpose of study was to design a model for the Physical education teachers’ professional characteristics and competencies. It is a field survey. The population included the whole Tehran Physical education teachers whose number total equaled 650 individuals. The sample included 242 participants (both male and female) selected by the cluster random sampling based on Krejcie and Morgan's (1970) table. The instrument to measure the Physical education teachers’ competencies was a structured questionnaire which the face and content validity were confirmed by the university experts and professors specialized in the field of education. Moreover, the construct validity was evaluated using AMOS software. The reliability was also assessed by Cronbach's alpha (internal consistency=0. 88). Inferential statistics is composed of the one sample t-test, the confirmatory factor analysis, and the structural equation modeling. The results showed that the educational competencies as well as the professional development competencies had the highest value of factor loading. In contrast, the technology competencies had the lowest value of factor loading. In conclusion, the teachers’ positive behaviors in their students and the students’ parents must be maintained and the new technologies in education must be improved.
