Abstract

Nowadays, development and planning based on city locals is at the center of attention for urban designers and planners. This requires an understanding of the needs and demands of citizens from their built environment. This study attempts by identifying neighborhoods residents' needs prepares a setting for a systematic planning between physical environment and SOCIAL NEEDS and consequently, improve the quality of life in neighborhood communities. Because of neighborhood structure and its great importance in Iran, Isfahan has been selected as the study field. The main purpose of this study is to present a model to evaluate the social and PHYSICAL NEEDS of residents in a NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY. To do this, besides an interdisciplinary study with survey method, the Isfahanese point of view about physical and SOCIAL NEEDS and their hierarchy were achieved as well. Data collected from factor analysis were summarized into 8 factors. The findings from Freidman's test indicate that in NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY level, the most important people's need is the construction of social discourses with others. After that the need to recreational facilities, infrastructures, hygiene and healthy environment, participation in running the neighborhood, appropriate shopping centers and public transportation, security and neighborhood sense of belonging are followed respectively. Generally speaking, the establishment of public environments as a context for social communications is an urgent demand. The NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY needs model (NCNM) lightens the socio –physical features of city locals in Isfahan which can be applied for development and planning of other Iranian cities.
