Title

Comparison of Anesthesia with Sevoflurane and Propofol on Extubation time and Recovery Parameters During Cataract Surgery

Pages

  1-13

Abstract

Background: One of the most common outpatient surgeries is cataract surgery which requires a short anesthesia with fast recovery time providing minimal complications. This study aimed to compare Sevoflurane with propofol in terms of extubation time and recovery parameters in patients undergoing cataract surgery. Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial recruited 60 patients 18-75 years old with ASA 1 and 2 who were candidate for cataract surgery. Patients were randomly divided into two groups (30 patients per group). Group 1 received propofol 100 μ g/kg/min and group 2 received Sevoflurane 0. 5%-1. 5% to maintain anesthesia. Demographic data, hemodynamic parameters, surgery data, pain severity and patient satisfaction were recorded. Data were analyzed in SPSS 19 at significance level P<0. 05. Results: Patients in both groups matched for demographic characteristics. They showed no significant difference in terms of hemodynamic parameters, duration of surgery and anesthesia, awakening time, extubation time and recovery time. Patients in the two groups did not significantly differ in terms of nausea, vomiting, shivering and pain after the surgery. Patient satisfaction was high in both groups with no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The results showed that propofol and Sevoflurane are useful medications for maintaining anesthesia during cataract surgery, and can be used based on patient’ s conditions.
