Abstract

Background & Aim: Oral surgical procedures are usually accompanied with pain, SWELLING and other discomforts, which cause patients to fear. Several types of drugs have been used for reduction of postoperative SWELLING and TRISMUS. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of preoperatively administered LV DEXAMETHAZON in reduction of SWELLING and TRISMUS caused by SURGICAL REMOVAL of lower third molar.Method & Subjects: This double blind clinical trial was performed on 30 patients (17 female, 13 males) with age range of 18-31 years. All patients had bilateral impacted lower third molar. Equal amounts of distilled water versus DEXAMETHAZON were injected intravenusly for each side randomly. The distance between two mandibular gonial angles and mouth opening inter incising was recorded preoperatively and 2 day's & one week postoperatively. T test analysis was used as statistical procedure.Results: The study showed that there is significant difference between placebo and DEXAMETHAZON groups considering the variables studied.Conclusion: The study confirmed the positive effect of preoperatively administered LV DEXAMETHAZON in reduction of SWELLING and TRISMUS caused by SURGICAL REMOVAL of lower impacted third molar.
