Abstract

Purpose: To determine the INCIDENCE of PTOSIS after extracapsular cataract extraction at Labbafinejad Hospital during 1992- 95, Tehran, Iran. Method: This descriptive study was performed on cataractous patients who underwent extracapsular cataract extraction. Lid fissures of the patients were measured before and 2, 3, and 6 months after surgery by same person and method. Surgery was performed in the same manner in right or left eyes: local or general anesthesia, superior rectus muscle bridle suture, and use of lid speculum for patients. PTOSIS ≥2 mm was considered significant. Results: Two hundred sixty seven eyes of the same number patients were surveyed. Mean age of the patients was 65 years. Post-cataract extraction PTOSIS occurred in 28 eyes (10.5%). There was no statistically significant difference between the INCIDENCEs of post-cataract PTOSIS according to gender. In 20 of the 28 eyes (64.2%), a predisposing factor like dermatochalasis was present. Conclusion: The INCIDENCE of post-cataract PTOSIS was about 10.5%. The INCIDENCE is especially high when a predisposing factor like dermatochalasis is present. Precautions should be taken for vulnerable patients.
