Abstract

Head blight of wheat caused by Fusarium species is a major disease of wheat in northern provinces of Iran. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of potential bacterial ANTAGONISTs versus recommended fungicides in the control of head blight of wheat caused by Fusarium gramiearum. Eighty infected spikes and 290 wheat samples were collected from various regions of Mazandaran and used to isolate Fusarium spp. and epiphythotic bacteria. Thirty two out of 132 bacterial strains belonging to Pseudomonas and Bacillus recovered from wheat samples effectively inhibited growth of F.grameinearumin in vitro tests. The ANTAGONISTic isolates BI, N4, S2 and B4, appeared to be the most effective strains in inhibiting growth of F. graminearum. The ANTAGONISTic isolates and fungicide were effective in reducing the disease severity and increasing 1000 grain weight in the greenhouse tests. In field evaluation trial, using the 4 ANTAGONISTs and fungicids, a decrease in disease severity and increase in grain yield was discernible. Treatments receiving Rovral-Ts (at 1 k/h) and or a mixture of ANTAGONISTs were superior The ANTAGONISTic effects of the biocontrol agents against F. graniearum appeared to be due to the production of antibiotics, SIDEROPHOREs and HCN. Based on the results of the physiological and biocemical tests, strains B1 and S2 were very similar to P.fluorescens biovar 1 and strains N5 and 84 were identified as P.aeroginosa and B. subtilis, respectively.
