Abstract

Introduction: One approach to find out drugs to improve learning and memory power has been focused since old time. The gum resin of Boswellia serrata (Frankincense) has attracted the attention of public community in Iran. According to traditional medicine documents, Frankincense has been used for increasing memory power and many Iranian pregnant women consume Frankincense for enhancing power of learning and memory of their children. This study evaluates learning and memory in adult rats whose mothers consumed Boswellia serrata during their gestational period. Methods: Two month old male Wistar rats whose mothers were given orally aqueous extract of the Boswellia serrata (0.1g/kg/day) during gestation (3 weeks) were used (n=8). We estimated power of learning and memory, according to active avoidance learning test by using shuttle box device. Experiments were done in four stages: prelearning, postlearning, short-term memory and long-term memory. In each stage, 90 trials were examined for each animal. The number of trials in which the animal had left the dark box of shuttle box without electrical foot-shock was recorded and the proportion of un-shocked crosses to the total number of trials was considered as learning/memory percent. Results. Results showed that; there is a significant increase of power of learning at post-learning stage (P< 0.012) and short-term memory (P<0.01) and long-term memory (P<0.001) in rats who received Frankincense parentally, as compared to control group. Discussion: Boswellia serrata gum resin might be potential improving memory medicinal plant. The constituents and precise mechanism responsible for the efficacy of Boswellia serrata gum resin are still a matter of debate and remain to be clarified.
