Abstract

Introduction: The oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. Flavonoids are naturally occurring phenols. They are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and are consumed through intake of vegetables, fruits, tea, and therefore potentially present in human plasma in a diet-dependent concentration. These compounds are believed to have antioxidant, anticoagulation and anti-lipid peroxidation properties. They have also been referred to as scavengers of free radicals. In this study the susceptibility of LDL to in-vitro oxidation was assessed essentially using the technique described by Esterbauer et al.Methods: LDL oxidation was monitored by change in 234 nm absorbance in the presence and absence of pure flavonoids, namely morin, genistein, apigenin and biochanin A, naringin and quercetin used at different concentrations. Results: These flavonoids significantly inhibited in-vitro LDL oxidation. Genistein, morin and naringin had a stronger inhibitory effect against LDL oxidation than biochanin A or apigenin. Quercetin had pro-oxidant effects at high doses and antioxidant effects in low doses.Discussion: The mentioned flavonoids have antioxidant properties and may be useful in the management of cardiovascular diseases in which atherosclerosis plays an important role.
