Abstract

Malignant lymphoma, traditionally considered tumors of the lymphatic system has been defined more recently as solid neoplasms of the immune system. Hodgkin disease (HD) is a neoplastic disorder originating in lymphoid tissue and defined by the presence of the Reed-Sternberg cell. The presence of a variety of nonmalignant cell type and the demonstration of DNA synthesis in lymphocytes in Hodgkin tissue suggest that Hodgkin disease may represent a "civil war" with in the immune system in which the nonmalignant cells are attempting to destroy the Hodgkin cell population bearing tumor specific antigens. Increased risk has been associated with decreased number of siblings, single family dwellings, decreased number of playmates early birth order sibling with Hodgkin disease, tonsillectomy. Although some studies linked excess of HD to tonsillectomy, the finding has not been consistent. In particular, fisk of HD by age at tonsillectomy has not been fully evaluated, despite the notable change in immunologic function of the tonsils between childhood and adulthood. To evaluate the risk of HD and other lymphomas, associated with tonsillectomy according to age of surgery, the study was conducted. 315 patients were diagnosed HD or Non Hodgkin's lymphoma splitted into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 146 cases with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Group 2, 169 cases with Non Hodgkin's disease and Control group (group 3) 150 normal individual. The history of tonsillectomy were in group 120 cases out of 146, in group 2, 5 cases out of 169 and in control group 4 cases out of 150. The result of his study had show significant relation between the history of tonsillectomy and Hodgkin's disease, especially in children under 6 years age.
