Abstract

Objective: This assay was done in order to evaluate results of astigmatic KERATOTOMY (AK) in patients referred to eye clinic from year 1378 to 1379.Methods: This study was done as a clinical trial with comparing pre & post-treatment outcome on 103 eyes of 61 patients having necessary requirements for AK surgery during autumn 78 to autumn 79.In these cases, in addition to complets systemic & ophthalmic exam, results of ophthalmic exams consisting of best corrected visual acuity (c&s correction), slit-lamp exam, intraocular pressure, fundoscopy, refraction c&s cycloplegy, keratometry and corneal pachymetry was recorded in files. In these patients AK was done with Ellis NOMOGRAM & they were followed up for at least 6 months post-operatively.The effect of surgery was detected with VA testing, refraction (ASTIGMATISM & Spherical equivalent). All data before & after surgery was jadged statistically with T test (Paired simple t-test & levene's test). Results: From all 61 patients, 33 (54.1%) was women & 28 men (45.9%). Mean age was 31.31±9.08 year (age limit of 18-53 year).In preooperative evaluation: Mean KERATOTOMY of patients was 3.12±1.93, average VA was 20/200 , average ASTIGMATISM was -3.75± 2.25 (c cycloplegia) , average spherical equivalent was -3.75± 3.40 & average corneal thikness was 554±39.9. In 18 cases (17.9%) only AK & in 85 cases (82.4%) AK & RK was done. In 6-month postoperative evaluation mean uncorrected VA was 70/100.98.06% of patients VA was more than 20/40. Mean ASTIGMATISM was -2.17±1.52 & mean spherical equivalent -0.92±1.4.These findings have significant differences with preoperative datas (P<0.0001). In this study no differences was found between men & women.Conclusion: Astigmatic KERATOTOMY with Ellis NOMOGRAM is an effective & relatively predictable method for correcting corneal regular ASTIGMATISM.
