Abstract

Until recently: There was a consensus on the CLASSIFICATION of periodontal disease proposed by American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in 1989. This CLASSIFICATION, however, has some limitations. For example, unclear diagnostic criteria, overlap of different disease groups, undefined diseases with calssification, overemphasis on the onset of plus progression rate or the disease, and the impossibility of determination of these disease. In fact gingival inflammation was not even defined in the CLASSIFICATION.In 1999, an international committee was appointed by AAP to to revise and restore the calssification. This work concluded with a new calssification based on a comprehensive approach to all disease.The present article reviews this calssification, highlights the differences, and makes comment on it.
