Abstract

In order to identify the main predictors of MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE the structural equations models (covariance structure analysis method) were used to test the causal effects of informational sources of self-efficacy on PERSONAL QUALITIES (mathematics attitude, mathematics ability, and self- regulation strategies), MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY and MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE. Moreover the investigation of PERSONAL QUALITIES effects on MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY, MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE, and relationship between the qualities were other goals of the research. 848 eight grade students (middle schools) were randomly selected to participate in this study. The results revealed that measurement models of informational sources of self-efficacy and mathematics ability were in accordance with factor analysis of tests but the measurement models of mathematics attitude and self-regulation strategies were different. The factor analysis of MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE test was similar to MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE contents, however exploratory and confirmatory analysis of MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY revealed two factors: composite MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY and geometry self-efficacy. In the second stage of LISREL, structural equation models were applied to estimate and test the hypothesized effects of exogenous variables on endogenous variables, also the hypothesized effects between endogenose variables. Final model revealed that the only exogenous variable, the informational sources of self-efficacy, had significant direct effects on mathematics attitude, mathematics ability, self- regulation skills and MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY. Moreover, this independent variable had indirect effects on MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE by mediating of MATHEMATICS SELF-EFFICACY, mathematics ability and self-regulation skills. The other significant paths revealed that mathematics ability as a most predictor had a direct and indirect effects on MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE. Self regulation skills also had an indirect effect on performance via math self-efficacy. A substantial proportion of variance (50%) in MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE was predicted from the model.
