Investigation of adsorptive properties of zeolite ZSM-5 for the separation of toluene vapors in the air

Abstract

 Background and aims: Toluene is one of Volatile Organic Compounds that have harmful physical effects and can be used different adsorbents such as zeolites to control Toluene. The aim of this study is evaluate the adsorptive properties of zeolite ZSM-5 for the separation of Toluene vapors from the air. Methods: The XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), BJH (Barrett-Joyner-Halenda) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) tests are used to display the physical properties of ZSM-5 zeolite. To determine the Adsorption capacity of Toluene vapors, it enters from dynamic system to a reactor with 25 centimeter high contain 1 gr of ZSM-5 with 42 ppm concentration and 0. 5 liter per minute flow rate. Inlet and outlet concentration of Toluene vapors were checked continuously. Eventually after the advent of first concentration of Toluene in outlet of reactor, the Adsorption capacity was calculated by related associations. It should be noted that to remove the error, these laboratory tests repeat three times and then the average time and concentration used. Results: ZSM-5 zeolite had a special surface of 298. 88. Absorption of 42 ppm concentration of Toluene vapors by 1 gr zeolite took 485 minutes. After the first departure of Toluene, it takes 225 minutes to reach to the saturation point. 1 gr of zeolite have the capacity to adsorb 44. 91 milligram Toluene. 1gr of zeolite displayed the capability to adsorb 44. 91 milligram of Toluene. According to IUPAC classification, the adsorbtion isotherm of this kind of zeolite is type I. Conclusion: the ZSM-5 zeolite has high Adsorption capacity for Toluene vapors. This material with high specific surface and existence of small pores in its structure can be a suitable adsorbent for Toluene vapors.
