Title

INVESTIGATION OF INCLINED RETAINING WALLS (LOCATED ON SLOPES) PERFORMANCE AGAINST STATIC AND EARTHQUAKE LOADS

Pages

  17-31

Abstract

A common method to prevent slope failure or landslide is to employ retaining walls which are usually constructed in vertical positions. The construction of these walls involves excavation, formwork, and backfill with some difficulties. In most cases, especially for functioning of the front side of the wall, inclined and slope-supported wall construction can be considered to overcome some of these difficulties and to make the output more cost-effective. In this paper, earth pressure for static and EARTHQUAKE load conditions is investigated and comparisons are made between vertical and inclined walls with respect to geotechnical and structural aspects. Comparisons of several cases including vertical and inclined walls based on internal and external design criteria indicate that the inclined retaining walls act more properly than others from technical, practical, and economic viewpoints. Moreover, for identical static and dynamic loads, these walls provide a higher safety factor against different stability criteria.
