Abstract

This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate physicians knowledge of TUBERCULOSIS and DOTS method (Direct observation treatment short course) in BandarAbbas.
The subjects were 182 physicians of whom 102 were General Practitioners and 80 were Specialists. A questioner containing 29 questions on different aspects of TB and DOTS method was completed by each subject. The average score acquired by all of the subjects was 16.5 out of 29, i.e the GPs scored 17.75 and the Specialists scored 15.93. The difference was not statistically significant (P>0.005). The number of correct answers given by the physicians was in DOTS method (70.5%), treatment (59.5%), clinical symptoms (56.5%) respectively, and only 40.7% of physicians had knowledge of case finding which is essential for controlling the disease in the community. It is recommended that more effective training programs on TUBERCULOSIS should be planned for the physicians.
