KLINEFILTER'S SYNDROME, CHROMOSOMAL FINDINGS, AND CHALLENGES FACING INFERTILE MEN REFERRED TO CYTOGENETIC CENTER OF URMIA UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Abstract

Background & Aims: KLINEFILTER'S SYNDROME is the most common genetic cause of MALE INFERTILITY. The major reason of this syndrome is non-disjunction of chromosomes in the first or second stage of meiosis in germinal cells or in fetal cells. But many cases remain undiagnosed because of substantial variation in clinical presentation and insufficient professional awareness of the syndrome itself. Early recognition and hormonal treatment of the disorder can substantially improve quality of life and prevent serious consequences. Therefore, cytogenetic and karyotyping studies are recommended as suitable diagnostic tools in patients.Materials & Methods: According to family history and physical examination, 99 patients were selected and GTG banding karyotype was carried out on them. Results: In 99 infertile men, 34 patients (34.34%) had KLINEFILTER'S SYNDROME, 27 (27.27%) of the cases had classic form of the KLINEFILTER'S SYNDROME (47, XXY), and 7 (7.07%) had mosaic form of KLINEFILTER'S SYNDROME (47, XXY/46, XY). The majority of the patients (76%) were more than 20 years old in the first visit.Discussion: The result of the karyotype shows that it is possible to use this tool as a suitable diagnostic procedure. Diagnosis of the disease in the early stage enables us to refer the patient to infertility centers for intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) on time. Also quality of life increases by receiving hormone in early stages of life.
