Abstract

This paper initially describes Peter L. Berger's SECULARIZATION theory which claims that MODERNIZATION necessarily leads to downfall of RELIGION in contemporary societies. The paper then discusses Berger's DE-SECULARIZATION theory which emerges as a complete revision of his earlier thoughts. Such revision maintains that the contemporary world is as religious as the world preceding it, although acknowledging that PLURALISM has somewhat weakened once-held firm beliefs. Learning science (higher education) like PLURALISM and as a secularized worldview may produce secularized individuals. Then, drawing on testable hypotheses, the paper examines the empirical validity of Berger's ideas as applied to Iran.
