Abstract

In the Iran logical literature the social formation of the pre-capitalist Iran is conceptualized in terms of discourses of FEUDALISM, Astaticism (Asiatic mode of production, and the patrimonial (the Weberian) approach. Lacking a distinct economic logic, the first two discourses follow a rural economy; and within the third discourse, THE SAFAVID IRAN is defined in light of the presence of the patrimonial regime (which is understood as a political element). Within all these three discourses the totality of the Safavid's society and economy are conceptualized (privatively or affirmatively) using either the Western FEUDALISM or the Western rationality (in privative sense) so that in these discourses the concepts of Western FEUDALISM and rationality bear the idea] methodological function of "types".This paper initiates with a critique of the above approaches. Noting the theoretical deficiencies in the existing Iran logical literature it then attempts to present an independent concept of social formation for the Iran of the Safavid era. Such an endeavor is undertaken within the framework of STRUCTURAL MARXISM utilizing a structural definition of THE SAFAVID IRAN. In such definition the structural features of THE SAFAVID IRAN determine the concept of Iran in that era. This constituted a structure in which several modes of production within a dynamic articulation acted to determine the fluid features of THE SAFAVID IRAN. Having reached such structural definition, the structural features pertaining to Iran of the first and second Safavid centuries are manifestations of dynamism of articulation of modes of production in those two centuries.
