Abstract

This article examines the impact of some relevant contextual and attitudinal variables on GENDER egalitarian attitudes. Such an examination is based on assumptions that due to the recent socioeconomic changes, GENDER division of domestic and social roles is being faced with new functional necessities, and that under the influence of modern intellectual movements the traditional division of GENDER roles encounter great challenges. Our investigation is carried out through a secondary analysis of data provided by a survey method research on attitudes and behavior of UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. The sample of the study included 1522 male and female students of 21 non-medical universities throughout Iran. The measure of GENDER egalitarian attitude was developed based on domestic and social roles. The data reveal that students are, to a great extent, inclined toward modern egalitarian attitudes of the division of GENDER roles. In this regard, however, they still hold on to traditional views, in some respects. Regarding the association between egalitarian attitudes and the examined independent variables, females are more egalitarian than males.There is also a positive relationship between egalitarian attitudes and socioeconomic status, adoption of the residential area, development of intellectual tolerance, and political reformism, while RELIGIOSITY had a negative relationship with independent variable.
