Abstract

The present research investigates the relationship between FAMILY FUNCTION and EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE as a set of abilities (perception, appraising and expressing of emotion, the adjustment and management of emotion, and utilization of emotion in problem solving).The research is a relationship study. The sample consisted of 235 adolescents (aged 12 to 15) who were selected from among second and third grades of guidance school in Tehran through multi-stage cluster sampling. These subjects were asked to fill out the Schutte EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE scale and the family assessment device (FAD). The results revealed that FAMILY FUNCTION (dysfunction) is significantly and negatively correlated with EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, and the problem solving sub-scale is known as one of the predicators of EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. The results also showed that adolescents with lower than five family members significantly scored on the EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE higher than adolescents with more than five family members. Also girls scored higher than boys on the total EI score and all the other sub-scales.
