Abstract

The present research evaluated the effectiveness of Systematic Motivational Group Counseling (SMC) on marital distress. Participants, 23 couples studying at one of the higher education centers of Bojnord, had at least one year of marital life experience. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: 12 in the experimental group, 11 to the control group. A week prior to the research a marital satisfaction pre-test was administered. The experimental group was exposed to SMC for ten sessions. At the end of the sessions marital satisfaction post test was administered. Using ANCOVA, results were analyzed. The results showed SMC could significantly reduce marital distress. SMC significantly improved the average scores of participants on subscales of, global distress, affective communication, problem solving communication, time togetherness, aggression, disagreement about finances and sexual dissatisfaction. SMC could not significantly reduce the average scores of participants on subscales of role orientation and family history of distress.
