Abstract

The studied area is located in central Alborz Range Mountains and is situated in northeast of Tehran. The central Alborz Range is bounded to the north by Caspian Depression, and to the south by central Iranian plateau. After the epirogenic episode of upper permian time, the area of study was covered by an epicontinental sea.The marly limestones and dolomitic limes were deposited under the condition of shallow sea environment. The most important fossils within these rocks indicates trace of animal life and presence of worms which is named as "vermiculate limestones", and it represents the lower member of Elika Formation.In middle Triassic time the conditions of sedimentary environment were generally the same as lower Triassic time, but, due to change of salinity of water, variety of living animals were reduced to fewer kinds and in dolomitic rocks of this Age such fossils as Gastropod a, Pelecepoda and Ostracoda which could live under the saline conditions are more or less rarely preserved as trace fossils. Also, traces and remains of green and blue algae (Cyanophycea) is detected which is indicative of presence of Tidal flat depositional environment,In upper Triassic considerable thickness of alternating layers of evaporites (i. e, gypsum, salt, and dolomite along with marls and clays) occur which shallow marine environment is represented. The geologic setting interpreted by these deposits are tidal - lacustine sediments resulted from subsidence of the sedimentary basin at that time. This depositional environment is also represented as the result of transgression and regression of the sea. In alternation of argillitic marls, the Gyrogonite pelecepoda and microgastropoda is observed and this presence is belonging to the marginal basin environment. The evaporitic facies found in the study area indicates arid and dry climate during the percipitation of these rocks. The sedimentary facies like mudstones along with limestones of wackestone and packs tone types containing abundance of microfossils such as Foraminiferas of: Agathammina austroalpina, Kristian - Tollmann and Tollmann; Earlandia tintinniformis (Misik), Glomospira sp., Glomospirella friedli, Kristian-Tollmann; Trochammina alpina, Kristian - Tollmann; Trocholina sp., Involutina tenuis, (Kristian), Involutina communis, (Kristian); Involutina impressa, (Kristian - Tollmann), Involutina gaschei, (Koehn-Zaninetti and Bronnimann), Involutina gr. sinuosa, sinuosa (Weynschenk) type are found. The above fossils are probably related to upper Ladinian-Carnian Stages. In central Alborz, especially in regions situated in veresk-Sheshroudbar regions, the study of mapped and stratigraphy coloumns from Triassic series are represented by shallow sedimentary sea with corresponding geologic setting of supertidal to subtidal environments, which is: the sabkha-shelf-Iagoonal, shoal and offshore types. The upper member of Triassic limestone, i.e., Veresk member is charachterized by more-marine type of environments, having a more characteristic type of marine type of deposits containing.Foramineferas which has been reported from other parts of Alborz Mountains. The Veresk limestone is underlaid by a disconformity, which on its top lies the conglomerate and red breccia’s of base of Shemshak Formation. This geologic sequence can be interpreted in terms of epirogenic phase related to Early Kimmerian, and due to regression of the sea.
