METHANE CONVERSION TO HIGHER HYDROCARBONS BY AN ELECTRICAL PLASMA, EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES

Abstract

 Non - Catalytic direct conversion of methane to ethylene and ethane was studied using corona discharge plasma. The process was carried out at atmospheric pressure. The selectivity of C2 hydrocarbons was as high as 87-100% with a 12.5% methane conversion and negligible amounts of COx products. Effects of voltage, temperature, feed ratio and helium partial pressure on methane conversion and selectivity of products are investigated. The experimental results indicate the methane conversion increases on applying higher levels of voltage to the reactor. The optimum condition for this system, is at 300°C and CH4/O2 = 4/1. The methane conversion also increases on higher levels of helium partial pressure in the feed stream to the reactor. It indicates the helium atoms play a significant role as a third body on transferring energy from electrons to methane molecules.
