Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the effects of the imports of mid-materials and capital goods on non-oil exports in the manufacturing sector as well as non-oil exports behaviour against such imports. According to the method of analysis in this study, priliminarly, the long term behaviour of non-oil exports has been reviewed based on Johansen (1988) and Johansen-Juselius (1990) cointegration model. Then, after deriving the short-term co-integration vector, non-oil industrial exports has been identified through error correction mechnism (ECM). The results indicate that non-oil exports in the manufacturing sector is sensitive to the fluctuations of mid-material and capital goods imports. In this regard, there is an equlibrium relation, in the long term, between the exports and imports of mid-materials and capital goods. In other words, assuming all conditions remain fixed, one percent increase in the imports of mid-material and captical goods, will increase non-oil exports up to 65% in the short term, and more than 2% in the long term. This is due to the fact that the effects of the imported inputs, related to non-oil exports, are greater in the long term than in the short term. The envision of this study stresses trade liberalization and adopting outward oriented strategy for the Iran"s economy. Undoubtedly, considering these strategies can affect increases of exports revenues, growth in the efficiency of production factor and economic growth.
