Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study is to estimate the amount of DENTAL FLUOROSIS amongst 15-year-old high school students of Quchan and rural district of Titkanloo (30 kilometers west of Quchan).Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, 900,15 years old students (600 boys and girls in town, and 300 boys and girls in rural district of Titkanloo) were selected randomly and were examined for dental caries and fluorosis. Results: 1) The percentage prevalence of fluorosis in 15- year-old students of Quchan was 32% and in rural district of Titkanloo was 95.33%2) The percentage prevalence of fluorosis among the girls in Quchan was 33.67% and boys 30.34%, these figures were 97.34% and 93.34% for rural Titkanloo respectively.3)The high amount of fluorosis in Titkanloo is probably due to great amounts of fluorine in drinking water in Titkanloo (1.7ppm) in comparison with Quchan (0.7ppm)4)This study also showed that the prevalence of DENTAL FLUOROSIS in Quchan (32%) and Titkanloo (95.33%) is greater than Mashhad (5.6%), Birjand (3.9%) and Shahrood (4.5%).- The mean DMFT of 15-year-old students in Quchan was 2.98 The high prevalence of fluorosis in Quchan and Titkanloo maybe explained as follows:1)The concentration of Fluorine (F) in drinking water was 0.7 ppm in town and 1.7 ppm in Village.2)Quchan and Titkanloo are placed geographically in a plain smooth and flat and the edge of Atrak riverbed slows down ,Thus the concentration of F ions increases in the water. 3) The people of these regions use local products full of fluorine (such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products, corns, grains, cereals.
