Title

SEASONAL VARIATIONS OF HEAVY METALS (CU, PB, CD) IN THE INTERTIDAL SEDIMENT OF BAHRAKAN SHORE

Pages

  36-48

Abstract

HEAVY METALs are persistent which could enter aquatic food chain and cause different problems both for aquatic organisms and human being after they release in to the ecosystems. SEDIMENT is the final destination for HEAVY METALs in aquatic systems in which they accumulate. Determination of HEAVY METALs concentration and distribution in the SEDIMENT compared to available standards could serve as indication of HEAVY METAL pollution in the environment. In order to estimate the level of HEAVY METAL concentration in the SEDIMENT of intertidal zone of BAHRAKAN SHORE, SEDIMENT samples were collected from 5 different stations during low tide from summer 2007 to spring 2008. Samples were transferred to the laboratory, acid-digested and their concentrations were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer Unicam model 919. The patterns of metal concentrations in the SEDIMENT was: Pb>Cu>Cd. Mean Cu concentration in the SEDIMENT was 21.54-23.77, 20.93–22.80, 22.48–24.04, 21.54–23.73 mg/g for summer, autumn, winter and spring seasons, respectively. Mean Pb concentration in the SEDIMENT ranged between 41.70–57.06 mg/g in summer, 37.61–48.53 mg/g in autumn, 55.36–63.89 mg/g in winter and 46.82–58.77 mg/g in spring seasons. Similarly Cd concentration in the SEDIMENT was 1.85 to 2.18, 1.72 to 2.08, 2 to 2.32 and 1.85 to 2.04 mg/g in the four seasons, respectively. HEAVY METAL concentration in SEDIMENT was the highest in winter. The station located at the Zohreh river mouth was found to be more contaminated than others. Metal concentrations in the SEDIMENT were found to be higher than some available standards and seem to be of anthropogenic origin. Since population and industrial development are increasing in this valuable fishery area, regular monitoring of pollution in the area is recommended.
