Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between FINANCIAL DEEPENING and economic growth in Iran using time series data from 1973-2005. First, discusses a literature survey on FINANCIAL DEEPENING and economic growth and an analysis of financial indicators for Iran over the past three decades. Then, the paper examines empirically the causal link between FINANCIAL DEEPENING and economic growth in Iran using unit root and co-integration techniques within a bi-Variate vector auto-regressive (bVAR) framework. Results reveal a positive relationship between FINANCIAL DEEPENING and economic growth for Iran with the direction of causation running from economic growth to FINANCIAL DEEPENING. This outcome is consistent with the findings for countries which have less sophisticated financial systems.
