Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiology of bacterial INFECTIONs in the large educationl HOSPITALs has important role in empiric antibacterial treatment of febrile patients until the CULTURE results become available. This study was aimed to determine the relative prevalence of INFECTIONs and their ethiologies in Al -Zahra HOSPITAL during 1995-1997.MATERIALS & METHODS: This was a descriptive study to demonstrate the relative prevalence of INFECTIONs and their ethiologies by studying the CULTURE results in the laboratory of Al-Zahra HOSPITAL during 2 years.RESULTS: There was total number of 2765 positive CULTUREs from which the most sites of INFECTIONs were urinary tract (33.3%), blood (21.7%) and respiratory tract (14%), consequently. The most number of positive CULTUREs were from ICD. The most of the bacteria were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and aminoglycosides.CONCLUSIONS: The relative prevalence of INFECTIONs and their ethiologies in this study were almost the same as those reported by the others throughout the world.
