Abstract

'Shahmiveh' PEAR is one of the most important PEAR cultivars grown extensively in Iran. During 2 years (2000 and 2002), flowers of 'SHAHMIVEH' PEAR were self- and cross-pollinated with pollen grains of PEAR cultivars: 'Bartlett', 'BeurreBosc', 'BeurreHardy', 'Koshia', 'Luisbon', 'Peighambari' and' Sefasleh'. 'SHAHMIVEH' PEAR showed gametophytic SELF-INCOMPATIBILITY. therefore use of compatible POLLINIZER for 'SHAHMIVEH' is necessary. Pollen grains of 'Koshia' and 'Bartlett' induced highest fruit set, therefore they are suitable POLLINIZERs for' Shahmiveh'. 'Peighambari' pollen grains had the lowest rate of germination and could not fertilize 'SHAHMIVEH' flowers. Therefore, it can not be recommended as POLLINIZER for this cultivar. It was found that POLLINIZER can influence fruit set and seed number per fruit. Pollen grain source had no significant effect on fruit weight and TSS. There was no correlation between seed number per fruit and fruit weight.
