Title

MORPHOBIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOME NEWLY SELECTED WALNUT GENOTYPES FROM SEEDLING COLLECTION IN KAHRIZ-ORUMIA

Abstract

 In order to select comercially and horticulturaly valuable WALNUT GENOTYPES, about 1050 seedling GENOTYPES presented in Kahriz Orumia WALNUT collection were screened during three phases from 2005 to 2007. According to obtained results significant differences were observed among 15 finally selected GENOTYPES in terms of tree height, yield, fruit quality, flowering and nut maturation time. The highest yield per tree 75.7, 52.9 and 49.1 kg/tree were produced by KZ4, KZ1 and KZ5, respectively. With a tree height of approximately 9 and 3 meters KZ 4 and KZ3 were the tallest and shortest ones. Among the all of assessed GENOTYPES, the most late-leaf and early-leaf GENOTYPES were KZ5 and KZ4, respectively. Four GENOTYPES including KZ3, KZ8, KZ9 and KZ12 showed higher percentage (>53%) of lateral bearing as well as low fruit (10.3-11.8 g) and kernel (5.5-6.4 g) weight. Two GENOTYPES including KZ1 and KZ2 produced higher fruit weight (16.2 g). Four GENOTYPES including KZ3, KZ11, KZ13 and KZ 14 expressed lighter color (1.3-1.6 from 6) of kernel. Some GENOTYPES such as KZ3 and KZ13 have thin shell (paper) and higher percentage of kernel. Above mentioned GENOTYPES showing horticultural valuable traits as well as previously selected ones (OR126, OR60, KH53 and OR81) were introduced to further study in term of adaptation to different condition.
