THE EFFECTS OF TWO DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, BEHBAHAN AND KARAJ, ON BULBING , QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF SIX IRANIAN ONION CULTIVARS (ALLIUM CEPA L.)

Abstract

 Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most important native vegetable crops in Iran. Although the threshold of PHOTOPERIOD and thermal sum for BULBING have been determined in many cultivars, no research has so far been carried out in this field for Iranian cultivars. An experiment was conducted in order to determine threshold of these factors for ‘Safid Behbehan’, ‘Ghermez Iranshahr’, ‘Kemeri Khomain’, ‘Dorcheh Esfahan’, ‘Ghermez Azashahr’ and ‘Safid Qom’ cultivars in two locations (Behbahan and Karaj) for one year (2006-2007) in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Adaptation of mentioned cultivars in two locations and effects of different climatic conditions on quantitative and qualitative characteristics of these cultivars were also studied. Seeds were sown in nursery in late October and seedlings were transplanted in late January in Behbahan region. In Karaj region, seeds were sown in early March and seedlings were transplanted in mid May. Earliest time of BULBING was estimated using BULBING ratio and the statistical technique of Cusmus. The threshold of PHOTOPERIOD related to BULBING was from 12:7' to 14:11' and THERMAL TIME ACCUMULATED from 886 to 2017 growth degree days for ONION cultivars. ‘Safid Qom’ cultivar would not bulb in Behbahan region since PHOTOPERIODs did not reach to sufficient length to stimulate the process. According to obtained results ‘Safid Behbehan’, ‘Ghermez Iranshahr’, ‘Kemeri Khomain’, ‘Dorcheh Esfahan’ cultivars are suitable for Behbahan climate and ‘Safid Qom’, ‘Ghermez Azarshahr’, ‘Kemeri Khomain’, ‘Dorcheh Esfahan’ cultivars for Karaj climate.
