Abstract

Water deficit is a critical issues in most of arid and semi arid areas. Physiological and morphological responses of native and commercial grasses under DROUGHT STRESS were investigated in a factorial experiment based on unbalanced completely randomized design in the year 2006. The cultivars that were used in this experiment included (i) ‘Starlet’ (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) (ii) ‘Barbal’ (Lolium perenne L.) and (iii) native tall fescue population (Festuca arundinacea). The irrigation levels included (i) 50%FC (ii) 25% FC (iii) RECOVERY from DROUGHT STRESS and 3 groups of pots that were always maintained at field capacity level as control. Results showed that native tall fescue under severe DROUGHT STRESS had 15 times, higher PROLINE than control. This grass with average value of 81.2 percent had higher relative water content. On the other word ELECTROLYTE LEAKAGE from cells had damaged to cell membrane in commercial tall fescue and perennial ryegrass with 38% and 48% respectively that was more than native tall fescue. These characteristics in addition to 85% increasing of root/shoot ratio showed more resistance under sever DROUGHT STRESS in native population.
