Abstract

This study is aimed at evaluating the accuracy of a simple SCORING system used for the diagnosis of ACUTE APPENDICITIS. 65 patients (above 20 years of age) with right lower quadrant pain requiring operation in Al-Zahra Medical center, of Esfahan Medical University, were selected. Operation was done after taking their history, physical examination and WBC count analysis. Required data included age, sex, duration of sympoms, genito-urinary. symptoms, muscle spasm and rectal mass. Appendicitis was added to the checklist only after the pathology report. The results indicated that 60% of the patients were male; mean age was 24.1±1.2. Also, in 93%, duration of symptomswasless than 1.5 days. Genito-Urinary symptoms were negative in 98.4%. Muscle spasm was observed in 60%. WBC counts were less than 13000/cmm in 60%. The SENSITIVITY of SCORING system was 98%, its specificity 57.1%, positive predictive value 89%, its specificity 57.1%, positive predictive value 89% and negative predictive value 88%. The findings of this study suggest that SCORING system, useful for the diagnosis of ACUTE APPENDICITIS, can be used for decteasing the number of false negatives.
