Abstract

Objective: This study examined the relation between FAMILY FUNCTIONING and INTERNALIZING DISORDERS in ADOLESCENT girls; and also it compared the FAMILY FUNCTIONING of dispatched families (affected by drug abuse, DIVORCE) with that of normal families. Method: 334 ADOLESCENT girls aged 14–18 years were selected from 22 high schools of Mashad to complete Youth self-report (YSR), and Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation scales (faces III). Results: Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed that girls who had symptoms of INTERNALIZING DISORDERS reported their families as less cohesive and less satisfactory compared to normal girls. Girls from drug-using families reported their family cohesion less compared to girls from normal families. Logistic regression analyses revealed that family cohesion and satisfaction with family adaptability were 72.7% predictive for subjects classification as symptomatic or normal groups. Conclusion: FAMILY FUNCTIONING and family therapy must be considered in the assessment and management of psychological problems of ADOLESCENTs, especially the INTERNALIZING DISORDERS in ADOLESCENT girls.
