Abstract

By the term of "American English" it is meant the English language as used in the United States of America. The speakers of American English outnumber all native speakers of English outside the US by about two to one and those of British English by nearly four to one. This advantage, strengthened by US involvement with world affairs, has given American English a global importance in the late 20th century comparable to that of British English in the late 19th century. This history of the variety falls into three periods, whose dates correspond to political and social events with important consequences for the language: (1) The Colonial Period, during which a distinct American English was started. (2) The National Period, which saw its birth, establishment, and consolidation. (3) The International Period, during which it has come increasingly under foreign influence and has exerted influence on other varieties of English and on other languages. British English contrasts with kinds of English used elsewhere, and especially in England, the usage is tautologous. For example, the language-teaching organization Linguaphone makes a distinction in advertising its courses between simply "English" and "American English". In addition, the phrase British English has a monolithic quality, as if it were a homogeneous variety and a straight-forward fact of life.
