Abstract

Agricultural sector as a most important food producer sector is not only a main consumer of ENERGY, but also a main ENERGY producer. Agricultural sector, which is expected to provide food for a country's population, is faced with resource constraints. So there should exist a balance between use of resources and level of production. In this study it was tried to use an index of efficiency, in a framework of fractional programming, to develop an efficient system of ENERGY to be used in producing main crops, in Khorasan province, while maintaining SUSTAINABILITY. The required data were gathered from various institutions as well as from a sample of 1572farmerspickedup through a two stage random sampling method. In order to analyse the data, the sample of farmers was categorized into eight groups, using analysis of variance. Standard tables were applied to change various cropping activities into ENERGY units. The results indicated that there is an inverse relationship between ENERGY efficiency index and gross. margin, that is, by giving priority to ENERGY optimization, and placing crops with higher efficiency in the cropping pattern gross margin decreases, and vice versa. Regarding ENERGY efficiency index of crops it can be concluded that ENERGY is being wasted in production of some crops such as tomatoes and melons and therefore threatening the SUSTAINABILITY of AGRICULTURE sector. On the other hand production of such crops as wheat, barely, lentil, sugar beet and potato do support SUSTAINABILITY.
